This coming Tuesday is an opportunity to thank the brave men and women who have served our country. South Dakota is home to more than 60,000 veterans who served from World War II through today. Veterans Day is an important reminder to take time to thank those who sacrificed to preserve and protect the United States.

I was in fifth grade when the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened. From then on, I knew I wanted to serve my country, and I joined as soon as I could. In fact, the month I turned 17 is when I joined the Army National Guard with my parents’ permission.

I’ve recognized over 60 Vietnam-era veterans so far this year, including eight veterans in Hot Springs this week. These men and women answered the call to serve, and we owe them the gratitude they didn’t receive when they returned home after the Vietnam War.
