Johnson Bill to Protect Mount Rushmore Receives Hearing in Federal Lands Subcommittee

July 13, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Mount Rushmore Protection Act led by U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) was debated during the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands. Johnson introduced South Dakota State Senator and Majority Whip Helene Duhamel as the witness for his bill. More than 8,000 bills are introduced each Congress, and only a few hundred receive a committee hearing.

Mount Rushmore has been the target of calls from activist groups, companies, and Hollywood elites to remove or rename the monument. Johnson’s bill would prohibit the use of federal funds to alter, change, destroy, or remove the likeness, the name of, or any of the faces on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Johnson introduced the Mount Rushmore Protection Act in the 116th, 117th, and 118th Congress.
