Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) issued a statement following President Trump’s announcement of a Department of Justice investigation into the cattle markets.

“Beef is flying off the shelves, while our cattle producers can barely make ends meet. Something doesn’t add up,” said Johnson. “I’m grateful after calls from Midwest members, the president is ramping up this investigation for cattle country. COVID-19 has exposed the cracks in our supply chain.

“Since my first months in office, I’ve called for investigations into any indication of price fixing. Our ranchers have made it more than clear, they don’t want a handout from the federal government, they want a competitive market.”

In September 2019, Johnson spoke on the House floor in support of an investigation into the cattle markets following the Holcomb fire.  Last month, Johnson wrote a letter to President Trump requesting the investigation be expanded to multiple agencies for a more comprehensive approach. Last week, Johnson, along with 24 U.S. House members requested the U.S. Department of Agriculture release their investigation findings into cattle market volatility.
