Johnson Questions GAO on Foreign Investment in U.S. Farmland

October 3, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) and 129 colleagues questioned Comptroller General Gene Dodaro of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on foreign investment in U.S. farmland and its impact on national security, trade, and food security.

“Seeing foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land increase over the past decade is concerning, especially ownership by our adversaries like China,” said Johnson. “Allowing increased ownership could pose a threat to our food security and national security. Congress is sounding the alarm, and it’s time we understand how to best protect America’s food and national security.”

Since 2010, foreign ownership and investment in U.S. agricultural land has nearly doubled. In the wake of rising input costs for farmers, supply chain delays, geopolitical pressure, and high food prices, it is critical to understand the impact foreign ownership and investment can have on food security, national security, and the economy.
