Johnson & House Republicans Working to Strengthen Election Integrity
Washington, D.C. – Today, several U.S. House Republicans introduced the American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act to bolster election integrity and voter confidence, while protecting federalism. The District of Columbia Tribal Voter Identification Actled by U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) was included in the election integrity package. Johnson’s bill requires Washington, D.C. to accept valid photo identification issued by a tribal government.
“We must have an election system worthy of the public’s trust,” said Johnson. “Part of that goal is allowing voters to use a valid ID, including ones issued by a tribal government. I’m proud to support this bill that strengthens election integrity while also respecting the Constitution.”
Congress has complete legislative authority over elections within Washington, D.C. and can make America’s capital city the example of effective election administration.
Johnson is an original cosponsor of the ACE Act.
The American Confidence in Elections Act:
- Requires Washington, D.C. to adopt election security measures, including prohibiting same-day voter registration and ballot harvesting, and requiring valid photo ID to vote in person or request absentee ballot.
- Reaffirms it is a felony for non-citizens to vote in federal elections.
- Equips states with tools to boost election integrity and removes outdated federal policies that get in their way.
- Addresses voting issues faced by overseas military members & their families.
- Provides model state legislation and voter initiatives for state legislatures to consider.
- Protects Americans’ First Amendment right to speak political views and support candidates, causes, and organizations without fear of retribution.
