Johnson Announces Student App Challenge Winners from Spearfish

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) congratulated Congressional App Challenge winners, sisters Katelyn and Casie Dale, from Spearfish, South Dakota. Katelyn and Casie designed an app called the "Bill List Discrepancy Locator."

"Technological literacy is quickly becoming a vital skill for success both in business and daily life," said Johnson. "The goal of this competition is to get students excited about this important and growing field. I was especially impressed Katelyn and Casie developed an app that keeps local government accountable and ensures accuracy – the federal government needs an app for that, too."

Casie and Katelyn created the "Bill List Discrepancy Locator" to locate discrepancies in the list of payments made to vendors by the local city government and city council. According to Katelyn and Casie, "We were looking at the totals and making sure we hadn't made any mistakes in data entry when we discovered … a $324 inconsistency which we confirmed with the city. We found the needle in the haystack when it comes to errors, a 0.00029% error … We decided to automate this check, so we came up with the Bill List Discrepancy Locator."

Katelyn and Casie were selected as the winner by a panel of Computer Science teachers in South Dakota.
