Huron Resident Awarded “Strength of South Dakota”

February 11, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) announced Gerald Schied of Huron for the Strength of South Dakota Award. The Strength of South Dakota Award was created to celebrate and honor South Dakotans that display unusual perseverance, compassion, and innovation, and are beloved by their community.

Mr. Schied has been collecting aluminum nearly his entire life. Over the years his collection grew immensely, so he bought a can crusher and large totes in which to store the crushed cans. After hearing many news stories about the Make-A-Wish Foundation he felt obligated to finally haul in his collection to the recycling plant. Mr. Schied recycled more than one million aluminum cans and was able to present over $100,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"Gerald Schied started out with a simple plan of collecting aluminum cans, but it evolved into an impressive contribution to a deserving organization," said Johnson. "His dedication, resourcefulness and good-will is why I am honored to present him with the Strength of South Dakota Award."
