Fred Assam Elementary Students Awarded “Strength of South Dakota”

February 24, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) announced the students of Fred Assam Elementary of Sioux Falls for the Strength of South Dakota Award. The Strength of South Dakota Award was created to celebrate and honor South Dakotans that display unusual perseverance, compassion, and innovation, and are beloved by their community.

The Student Council at Fred Assam Elementary engaged in a service project for the month of January with the character focus of kindness. They chose a "penny war" fundraiser that would benefit the Midwest Honor Flight with a goal to support three local veterans' transportation to Washington D.C. The student body took on the challenge with excitement and surpassed their goal by raising enough money to support the travel costs of six veterans on the Midwest Honor Flight.

"The students at Assam Elementary took the desire of showing kindness seriously and surpassed their goal to honor our nation's heroes," said Johnson. "Their patriotism, kindness, and love for our veterans is why I am honored to present the students with the Strength of South Dakota Award."
